Each point is a knowledge block: a single standard, one of the knowledge-and-skill items inside it, or a finer learning component that a teacher would actually teach. Kindergarten sits at the core and each grade forms a shell further out, so the graph starts small and grows as you step through the grades. The four subjects each grow in their own direction.

To look at one part on its own, press Only next to a subject, or choose This grade only under the timeline. The selected blocks are then laid out afresh to fill the screen.

Three levels of detail

SOL standards (largest points): every current Virginia standard in Mathematics (2023), English (2024), Science (2018) and History & Social Science (2023).
SOL knowledge & skills: every lettered or numbered item listed under those standards, in the state's own words.
Learning components (smallest points): granular skills behind a standard. Math components come from Achievement Network and are mapped by them directly to Virginia's standards. English components cover Kindergarten to Grade 2 reading, writing and language. They are aligned to Common Core, and this site attaches each one to the closest Virginia item by text match. For Science, History & Social Science and English Grades 3–12, where no published component set exists, each item was broken into two to five components (knowledge, skill or vocabulary) drafted by an AI model (Claude) from the item's own wording. These are marked as AI-drafted on each block and have not yet been reviewed by an educator.

How the links were made

Part of: the official structure of the standards, plus each component's alignment.
Builds on · Coherence Map: Student Achievement Partners' expert map of which math standards prepare students for which later ones, carried over to Virginia's standards through shared learning components.
Builds on · inferred / editorial: where no expert map exists, each standard links to the most similar standard in the same subject one grade earlier, judged by the wording of the standard and its items. A smaller set was chosen by hand. Each link says which method produced it.
Cross-subject: about a hundred connections written by hand, each with a reason, plus a few dozen found by shared distinctive vocabulary between subjects taught within a year of each other. The computed ones are marked as such and are prompts to look closer, not claims.

Limits

Published, expert-built components exist only for Mathematics (K–12) and English (K–2). The rest are AI-drafted from the SOL wording and should be read as a first draft for educator review.
High school courses are placed on a typical Virginia sequence (for example, Algebra I in Grade 9 and Biology in Grade 10). Districts vary.
Text-matched and inferred links can be wrong. Treat them as a starting point for professional judgment.
